CQC rating requirements in care tenders
Many English care tenders require a CQC rating of Good or Outstanding as a pass-fail condition, and a rating of Requires Improvement or Inadequate can exclude you. Newly registered providers without a first inspection are usually assessed differently, often through registration evidence, policies and assurances instead of a rating. Always check how a tender treats your exact CQC position, because the rating gate decides eligibility before any quality scoring begins.
How the rating gate works
Where a tender sets a CQC standard, Good or above typically passes and Requires Improvement or Inadequate typically fails or triggers further scrutiny. Some buyers accept Requires Improvement with an action plan, but many do not. The documents state the exact rule, so read it rather than assuming.
Newly registered providers
If you are CQC registered but not yet inspected and rated, you cannot show a rating. Tenders usually allow for this, asking instead for your registration certificate, policies, staffing and assurances. Treating a missing rating as a complete bar is a common and costly mistake.
Children's services and Ofsted
Children's homes and some related services are regulated by Ofsted, not CQC, so the equivalent gate is an Ofsted rating. Make sure you are reading the regulator and rating that actually applies to your service before deciding whether you qualify.

Common questions
Do I need a Good CQC rating to win a care tender?
Often yes for adult care in England, as many tenders set Good or above as pass-fail. Some accept Requires Improvement with conditions. Check each tender, as the rule differs.
Can a newly registered provider bid without a rating?
Usually yes. Tenders generally make allowance for providers awaiting a first inspection, asking for registration evidence, policies and assurances instead of a rating. Our free eligibility check confirms whether a specific tender allows it.
What if my rating is Requires Improvement?
It depends on the tender. Some exclude anything below Good, others accept Requires Improvement with an action plan. Read the specific pass-fail wording before bidding.
